The Aftermath
By the time the attack was over more then 2,400 Americans were killed and 1,200 were wounded. Almost 200 American war planes were destroyed. Nearly 20 of the war ship docked at Pearl Harbor were sunk or destroyed, including 8 of the 9 battle ships used by the Fleet. Japan on the other hand had only lost 29 planes.
A Day Which Will Live in Infamy
The American people were stunned by the attack on Pearl Harbor. On December 8, 1941, President Roosevelt gave a speech asking Congress to declare war on Japan. Just hours after he gave his speech, a war resolution was passed by congress. Germany and Italy declared war on the United States on December 11 and it was once again pulled into a world war.
